The Milwaukee Zoo is about a 2 hour drive for us, so we try to make it there a few times per year. This zoo has a main loop which allows you to see about 75% of it’s animals in about an hour or so. The zoo has 2 new additions: in 2018, they added an otter exhibit (along with a new parking lot) on the back end of the zoo. In 2019, they added “Adventure Africa”, which currently features elephants, bongos, impalas, zebras, and cranes. In 2020, the hippo exhibit will be renovated. The rest of the zoo is nice as well, but still has some parts that are old and need to be updated. The big cats and giraffes still don’t have enough room, so hopefully that will come after the hippos.
Highlights:
- Adventure Africa – new in 2019, the elephants have way more space than before, including an authentic watering hole. The rest of the section includes several other African animals
- River Otters – a new 2018 exhibit shows playful river otters splashing around
- Bird House – this house is off to the side a bit and typically has less traffic; it offers a chance to see some colorful birds
Lows:
- Moose – sadly, to create room for the elephant habitat, the zoo was forced to relocate their moose; few zoos have moose so this was a nice plus for a Wisconsin zoo, as seeing animals in the zoo near their natural surroundings is a plus for me
- Space – while seeing the big cats in both an indoor and outdoor exhibit is very convenient, the indoor exhibit doesn’t offer enough room for the big cats; would like to see them expand this
- Ape house – I’m not sure why, but I get sad when I go in their ape house. I don’t feel like they have enough space in here. I much prefer macaque island (snow monkeys) which is outside this exhibit
