This small zoo in the Quad Cities is a fun one. It lacks the polished structure in its habitats that a larger city would be able to afford, but for a lower-budget zoo it does a good job of offering visitors the chance to interact with and a view a variety of animals.
Highlights:
- Big Cat exhibit – this is the only zoo that we’ve been to that has a black leopard; black leopards are majestic-looking and fun to study; the cat compound has several other large cats
- Porcupine – at the very far end of the zoo behind the giraffe exhibit is a small house with many different animals; included in this house is their porcupine exhibit, which is nice because theirs has a lot more space and is more viewable than most others we’ve seen
- Colobus Monkeys – this zoo has a lot of colobus monkeys, and we learned from a keeper there one time that they all came to the zoo as orphaned siblings, and have since started their own families
- Aquarium – in 2017 they added a small aquarium in the front of the zoo – was a nice addition since we had been there the previous year
Lows:
- Lion exhibit – kept away from the other big cats, the lion exhibit is pretty depressing; it’s a random patch of grass with a large chain link fence on all sides – this could definitely be improved upon
- African Savannah – behind the small animals building (behind the giraffes) are the zebras and ostriches in their African Savannah – although it’s pretty much just the open area they had so they through them together and called it that, as it lacks anything resembling their true habitat
