This zoo gets overshadowed due to sharing the same state as the Columbus and Cincinnati Zoos – but this zoo is still very fun and has many strong points. One of the things I love most is that although they have a walkway bridge where you cross over the highway, you’re able to view animals from the bridge (similar to my childhood dreams of having zoos in entrance ramps, which you may have read in the “Why do we Zoo” section). There aren’t an overwhelming amount of zoos that have hippo or elephant exhibits. That said, this zoo has both! Check out more in our Toledo Zoo Review below!
Highlights:
- African Savanna – Another example of an African Savanna done right – giraffes intermixed with warthogs and ostriches. There’s also a cheetah exhibit nearby, and a ride that takes you around all of it for a better view. I’m also a huge fan of watusi cattle, and they had some big ones in there!
- Tembo Trail – This exhibit has a large viewing area for the hippos. There is also a good amount of space for the elephants.
- Aquarium – They have a nice-sized aquarium complete with a shark touch tank, as well as a penguin exhibit on the outside.
- Reptile House – The reptile house is very nice and includes a very large alligator.
Lows:
- Great Apes – one of the saddest exhibits I’ve ever seen – the gorillas don’t have enough space, and it must have been past feeding time as the gorilla was pounding on the door where the keeper would come in; this exhibit was also not clean at all
- Needs updating – One of the biggest projects at this zoo was the addition of their African Savanna. I’d like to see them include some other new exhibits in the future.
