What I loved most about the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is that it felt like you were on a nature walk which happened to feature some animals. Having grown up in Michigan I have fond memories of strolling through nature preserves with my family. This zoo recreates that feeling while providing scenic habitats for the animals. Their addition of an African village to the zoo makes this a well-rounded attraction.
Highlights:
- Kangaroos – upon walking into the zoo you’re immediately met with a kangaroo exhibit – it’s not interactive but does allow you to see animals immediately
- Snow Leopard – one of the best snow leopard viewings we’ve seen – very active big cat at this zoo; they take care of him well
- Pond – there is a pond overlook with swans that on a cool but sunny fall morning was everything you’d dream of in Michigan
- Boardwalks – I love that the first half of this zoo is all on boardwalks – makes for a nice atmosphere
- African Savanna – the animals were scarce when we visited due to it being a cool October day, but this is a majestic space for the animals to roam
Lows:
- Connectivity – while the newer portion of the zoo does a good job of highlighting the African experience in theme, as well as group animals together, the first half of the zoo has separate exhibits which are often too small; it would be nice if they could thematically enhance the first half of their zoo
