The Racine Zoo, in very similar fashion to the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, is alongside the beach. I would recommend spending a day in Racine going to the zoo and the beach – would make for a nice outing. The zoo itself is comparable to those in Central Illinois. It’s a bit larger than your typical low budget zoo, and has some larger animals to keep the kids entertained. Below you’ll find our complete review of the Racine Zoo.
Highlights:
- Australia – Like several others we’ve visited, this zoo has a nice Australia exhibit. It gives the kangaroos a lot of space. There’s also an aviary to walk into.
- Giraffes – There is a giraffe feeding opportunity at this zoo as well. Racine lets the giraffe reach down to you so you can see how large they are.
- Rhinos – Rhinos are not common at small zoos as they need an appropriate amount of space. Small zoos tend to give this space to a larger number of animals. The rhino at this zoo has plenty of room and was enjoyable to watch.
- Reptile Building – right next to the entrance is a small reptile house. Inside you can find bats, birds, and of course, reptiles. It won’t take long but is worth the visit.
Lows:
- Big cats – I wish the lions had a bit more room, although they do have an indoor/outdoor exhibit.
- There wasn’t really a Wisconsin-themed area; I wish this zoo would incorporate that much like Milwaukee and the Henry Vilas Zoo (Madison, WI) do.
- Zoo Structure – This zoo very much feels like random exhibits placed next to each other. I can’t firmly say there is an African section or South America section. They would benefit from redesigning this aspect.
- Outdated – Many zoos we come across have outdated exhibits. However, Racine came across as being very old. The buildings are old, the exhibits are outdated and don’t give the animals much room, and they hadn’t made any chances in the three years between our visits.
