We visited the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas back in 2013. This was on a trip to Texas and before we really started getting serious about visiting zoos. But this smaller zoo was very enjoyable for us! First off this zoo has what I believe is a must-have at every zoo: An engaging attraction upon immediate entry to the zoo. This, combined with interactive opportunities to me are building blocks of an enjoyable day. The most memorable parts (below) are the gorillas and giraffes, but this zoo actually is pretty good size!
Highlights:
- Gorilla Island – upon entering the zoo, we could hear the gorillas playing together. They were fun to watch as the played and scampered about in the exhibit
- Giraffe feeding – this was the first zoo where we ever had the chance to feed giraffes, and we’ve been hooked ever since
- Monkeys – there were monkeys (and apes) everywhere! Chimpanzees; spider monkeys; gorillas; you name it…they had it!
- Flamingos – being from the north, typically we see flamingos in mud. It was so nice to see them in a beautiful exhibit for once!
