The Atlanta Zoo was the feature visit on a Zoocation we took in 2015. The draw to this zoo was (and still is) to see the giant pandas. Just four zoos in the US have them, and Atlanta is the only one we’ve visited as a family. Outside of that, I would say this zoo is a bit out-dated…which makes sense, as they’re currently doing some construction to make it better.
Highlights:
- Giant Pandas – highlight of the zoo, great to see them, and to see multiple of them.
- Asia – the only real area that was themed was Asia – which included the tigers, the Andean bears, and the pandas. They carried out this theme well.
- Elephants – the elephants could use more room, but it was by far the largest exhibit they had. We might be biased here because we opted for the elephant encounter which included a private training session.
Lows:
- Outdated – enclosures are very small, not a ton of room for the animals.
- Layout – other than Asia, this zoo really isn’t in sections – would like to see them make it flow more.
- Lack of free animal encounters – this Zoo does a lot of paid encounters with larger animals, that are $35 and more. But I wish they incorporated more free things, like making the kangaroo area a walkabout that visitors can come in with the kangaroos.
