We really enjoyed our trip to the Nashville Zoo, but we left the zoo anticipating a trip back in 2020 (it was 2015 when we visited). The zoo is undertaking a huge renovation project, with initial hopes of being completed by 2020. It appears all three phases will not be done by then, but this zoo is making big changes. They’ve redone their Asia exhibit, transformed the elephant area into a home for rhinos, and added a few smaller exhibits. More animals are coming in the future, including gorillas.
Highlights:
- Africa – turning the corner and seeing enormous elephants with tons of room to roam was breathtaking. We ate lunch by their pond, being able to see the giraffes as well. Excited to go back and see the rhinos in this space.
- Lorikeets – this lorikeet exhibit was awesome – very brightly colored birds that were very friendly and eager to interact.
- Asia – their Asia exhibit was on point, very well themed, despite being under construction. Excited to go back and see the tiger and Andean bear.
- Kangaroo Walkabout – this was the first time we got to touch a kangaroo!
Lows:
- Unused space – we felt like we walked a long way to see a few animals – hopefully after renovations there isn’t as much unused space.
- Animal interactions – other than the lorikeets and kangaroo walkabout, we didn’t see any interactive opportunities – hopefully those have been implemented as well.
- Animal Houses – I don’t remember there being many houses to walk through – would be nice to have some indoor exhibits.
