We finally made it to the zoo – down a long winding road that we thought might never end. We drove up the long driveway, and stopped in the parking lot – total capacity of about 20 cars. We wondered what we were getting ourselves into, and considered leaving – I’m so happy we didn’t! The Indian Creek Zoo is a hobby turned into a profession, and is home to hundreds of animals. Over the years they have slowly turned it into a professional looking zoo (while we were there they had pulled out an old rusted out “ZOO” sign, and were in the process of painting animal prints that are now on it today! Animal interactions are bountiful here, and it’s a must visit!
Highlights:
- Puzzles the Giraffe – We had the opportunity to interact with Puzzles, a very sweet giraffe. His friend Jigsaw is always nearby. Very neat attraction.
- Sloths – when we visited, Hokey and Pokey had just given birth to Flash, and they were all viewable in the main building. Since I believe they’ve been given their own house, and are also available for encounters where you can hold them!
- Interactions – the encounters mentioned above are just some of the ways to interact with the animals – a large majority of the animals can be fed by purchasing a feed cup.
Lows:
- Pavement – Because this is still somewhat of a start-up zoo, most of the grounds weren’t paved when we visited. It seems like they’ve made big strides in recent years. This would go a long way toward the professionalism of the zoo.
- More secure cages – they were in the process of building houses and more secure fences while we were there – most areas were pretty minimally secure at our visit.
