NEW Zoo (Green Bay) Review

Posted on May 29, 2019August 1, 2019

This is a fun zoo up in Northeast Wisconsin. It’s clear they value visitor engagement, as they offer seasonal pelican and penguin feedings, as well as year-round giraffe feedings. The zoo is set up in kind of a figure-8 setup. While there are distinct sections of the zoo, you might find yourself backtracking a few times. Check out our NEW Zoo Review below for more highlights!

Pros:

  • Wisconsin and Northern Trails – the strength of this zoo is their indigenous animals. The moose has plenty of room, as do the deer and most of the animals in the Wisconsin trail.
  • Tortoise Exhibit – it’s very rare that we call out a tortoise exhibit, but this one is phenomenal! It actually looks like a tortoise shell!
  • Penguin Exhibit – probably biased here since we did the penguin feeding, but for $10, how can you beat that?! We fed 5 fish each to the penguins – a memorable experience. The exhibit is nice because you can see their exhibit well from a boardwalk, or go behind to view them underwater.
  • Bison/Elk – in the middle of the zoo is their bison and elk exhibit. They give them plenty of room, with a pond in the middle. This was refreshing as some zoos don’t give them enough space.

Cons:

  • Space – unfortunately, several of the animals did not appear to have enough space – the bears, lions, macaques, and macaws for example. These exhibits also didn’t have much variance in terrain, and limited them to a single layer.
  • Let the animals shine – As mentioned above we really like how this zoo involves visitors by offering multiple feedings. However, at other times, we felt like the zoo was just getting in the way. The snow monkeys (macaques) have a nicely themed exhibit with a big red dragon on the outside of a house. The downside is that they are kept in a small, caged exhibit. Almost all other snow monkey exhibits we’ve seen keep them on an island with plenty of room to play. We felt the same way with the macaques and the albino alligator.
  • The admission gate – entrance to the zoo is done through the gift shop. That is fairly common. However, the line forms in the middle of the gift shop, making it a bit confusing and causes some delays.
  • Cleanliness – when you go to a zoo, you don’t expect it to be super clean. The bathrooms at this zoo were not properly attended to. It might be minor, but when you have 3 daughters…they notice this kind of stuff.
