This zoo vastly exceeded our expectations! Pittsburgh doesn’t often come into conversation for “Best Zoo.” In the 2019 Readers’ Choice Awards, it wasn’t a Best Zoo nomination. However, we had a blast at this zoo! Navigating this zoo was possibly the easiest of the 50+ zoos we’ve visited! The back-half of the zoo has a lot of kid-focused interactive activities. This zoo also utilized their elevation really well. At times you can look down at the other exhibits and re-look at what you just saw! Check out our Pittsburgh Zoo Review below to be ready for your visit!
Highs:
- Water’s Edge – This exhibit has polar bears and sea lions. The sea lions were very large and were a lot of fun to watch from the underwater tunnel!
- Kid’s Kingdom – The Kid’s Kingdom exhibit had many visor-friendly exhibits, like the Kangaroo walkabout, and the llama trek. In both of these exhibits you can walk in with the animals!
- Babies everywhere – We can’t decide if liked the clouded leopard babies or beaver babies more!
- African Savanna – The elephants were very fun to watch. Their habitat is near the giraffes and zebras, so it looks like they are all together! We ate lunch at a patio overlooking them.
- Aquarium – On the zoo’s website, they boast being one of six zoos in the country that is also an aquarium. We loved the aquarium! It’s definitely more than just some fish – it evens features a sting ray touch tank.
Lows:
- Big cats – We like that the zoo had a lot of big cat exhibits, but we think it’s time to give them an upgrade. The spaces seemed a bit small.
- Giraffe feeding – I’m sure there are logistical reasons for it, but daily giraffe feedings rather than several times per week would be nice.
