The Lee G Simmons Wildlife Safari Park is a nice change of pace from traditional zoos. The park is about 30 minutes south of Omaha. Unlike traditional zoos, you drive your car through the park to see various animals. There is a place to park about half-way through the park, where you can visit some exhibits on foot.
Highlights:
- Elk – The elk can be seen in multiple spots. We took two drives through the park. On the first trip, they were all chilling in the water. On the second drive, they were walking (as a herd) up the hill, and at one point surrounded our car.
- Bison – The bison weren’t very active on our trip, but there were a lot of them, and it was cool to see how big they are up close.
Lows:
- Limited amount of animals – this isn’t a big low for me, but it’s important to know when you visit that there aren’t a ton of animal species here. Throughout the park you can see elk, deer, and bison. At the stopping area, they have eagles, goats, and exhibits you can walk to for wolves and bears. And at the visitors center, there are prairie dogs. But know going in that this isn’t an all day trip.
