School is in session, and visiting the zoo (for us at least) is now relegated to the weekends. Soon we’ll be providing a list of popular fall events going on at zoos that you’ll want to be sure to attend! But until then, check out the headlines in the zoos for this week!
- AZA Conducts Annual Conference – This week the AZA conducted it’s annual conference, in New Orleans. As a result, many zoos have been posting about their accreditation being renewed. Locally, the Niabi Zoo in the Quad Cities was denied accreditation. You can read more on that story here. On a brighter note, the Nashville Zoo announced it has won the Top Honors in Best Exhibit Design award at the conference. More on that story can be found here.
- No Panda Babies on the Horizon – The National Zoo in Washington D.C. sadly announced that their female panda is not pregnant. Zookeepers said the she was showing signs of being pregnant, expecting a cub in September, but an ultrasound has confirmed she is no longer pregnant. Read more here.
- More Babies are Born – September keeps on rolling, and more babies are being announced at zoos across the country. The National Zoo announced the birth of clouded leopard cubs; Como Park Zoo announced the birth of a baby giraffe; Nashville Zoo announced the birth of a baby binturong (bearcat);
