This zoo has come a long way in the past ten years, redoing much of its old layout. It doesn’t get near the attention that a lot of other larger zoos do, but being nestled in the near downtown area of Indianapolis, it’s the perfect size for an afternoon zoo visit.
Highlights:
- Animal Feedings – New in 2019, you can feed flamingos! This is a great opportunity! You are also able to feed budgies, lorikeets, and Giraffes
- Walrus – This zoo is one of just 5 AZA-accredited in the country that has a walrus exhibits. The exhibit is home to two walruses, and there are only 13 in captivity in the US. View them underwater, and then walk up the path to see them from outside as well.
- Dolphins – As much as I enjoy the dolphin exhibit at Brookfield, the Indianapolis Zoo’s dolphin show/underwater viewing area is far superior. The show is just ok – more of a video than a demonstration; the underwater viewing rivals that of St. Louis’s sea lion exhibit, allowing you to walk inside and have dolphins all around you
- Orangutan – The orangutan exhibit is extremely unique; the outdoor portion is kind of shaped like an arch, and has ropes for the apes to walk around on; there is also an indoor area where you can get up pretty close to them.
- Aquarium – There is an aquarium included in this zoo with a shark touch tank – rare in the midwest, and can be a lot of fun.
- Africa – There is so much to see in the Africa section of the zoo!
Lows:
- MISTery Park – New in 2019, MISTery Park did not live up to the hype for us. Said to feature sloths, it actually ONLY includes sloths. Plus, because the exhibit is a small out-and-back, they monitor visitor attendance and create a long line.
- Butterfly Kaleidoscope – This exhibit sounded amazing to us. In reality, it’s a botanical garden with some butterflies. We’ve seen better butterfly exhibits. Also, it’s located next to the zoo, making entry more complicated than necessary.
