You probably can’t think of many reasons to travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, but whenever I hear someone say they’re passing through there for business or any other reason I always bring up the zoo. We traveled here on our first ever Zoo-Cation back in 2014, and recently revisited it because we had such fond memories. It’s a small zoo, but they put the animals first and create some great opportunities to experience these animals. The layout of this zoo is very well thought out. There are basically three wings of the zoo – Africa, Asia, and Australia, and each one of them is a can’t miss attraction!
Highlights:
- African Savanna – place in the middle of a circle loop in the Africa section, the savanna has several animals roaming free. On one visit, an ostrich attempted to snatch a stuffed animal from my daughter’s grasp!
- Honey Badger – while strolling through the African loop, check out the honey badger! It’s rare to see one at a zoo, and it is a very busy animal, and a good one to visit
- Kangaroo Walkabout – this was the first time we had the opportunity to venture in with kangaroos – lots of room for them in this exhibit
- Boat Ride/Train Ride – we’ve done both at this zoo and enjoyed both; the boat ride takes you in little automated canoes around the Australia exhibit, as if you’re on a crocodile hunt – my little ones were a bit scared, but you get good views of the animals
Lows:
- Giraffes – I really wish the giraffes were in with the other animals on the savanna. They still have plenty of space and are adequately cared for (this zoo does a good job of monitoring temperature before putting their giraffes on display) but it would seem more natural if they were on the savanna
- Asia – the Asia exhibit is set up well with boardwalks and room for monkeys and other animals to explore – but both times I’ve left wanting a bit more from this exhibit
- Sting Ray Tank – our daughters love having the opportunity to touch sting rays; unfortunately though, unlike most sting ray touch tanks this one is too deep and offers very few opportunities for younger guests to touch a sting ray
