The Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville, Indiana was a pleasant surprise. The zoo is a bit outdated, and they could do a bit better job of organizing their exhibits. But for being a small budget zoo, they do a good job of providing interactive activities.
Highlights:
- Sun Bear – we came on the day they welcomed “Mr Fong” their new sun bear to the zoo, complete with a teddy bear parade, with the Berenstain Bears in front; it was quite the production
- Giraffes – although I would like to see them create a savanna with more varied terrain for the giraffes, this is by far the most we’ve ever gotten for our money in regards to a giraffe feeding – well worth it
- Rhino – the indoor/outdoor rhino exhibit is great, giving the rhino plenty of room to stroll around as well as great views for the visitors
- Rainforest Exhibit – very nice themed rainforest exhibit – haven’t seen a tapir with as much room as they have here
Lows:
- More Natural habitats – while this zoo is nice, the habitats aren’t very up to par; this is one of the reasons I appreciate the Sun bear exhibit, is that you could tell that enhanced it upon the new bear’s arrival; this could be done for several other exhibits
