This is the zoo where it all began for us. We thought we were getting a membership to our little community zoo, and it ended up being our link to the AZA. Cosley Zoo in Wheaton, Illinois is very small, and is basically a farm. But the zoo has big plans over the next several years to focus on other animals indigenous to Illinois, such as black bears, river otters, and birds. Currently this zoo is about a 45 minute walk to see everything, mainly farm animals. They have an old caboose with interactive children’s toys inside as a change of pace.
Highlights:
- Duck Feeding – daily at 10am you can feed the ducks for $2 – this is a good event for the kids
- Chicken Feeding – daily at 11:45am you can feed the chickens for $2 – not as thrilling as the ducks, but still fun for the kids
- Community Events – several times throughout the year the zoo puts on events for the community, such as breakfast with Santa, an Easter Egg hunt, a character day in the fall, a 5k in the summer, and more
Lows:
- An enhanced environmental experience – I’m most excited for the additions to the zoo because they promise to focus on environmental biomes; this will transform the zoo from a petting zoo to an educational opportunity, which is currently lacking
