Babies Everywhere!

Posted on May 22, 2019

Spring is now in full swing, and on the occasional warm day the zoos are full of visitors who have been stuck inside for way too long! Although you probably don’t need an excuse to get outside, I have one for you: Zoos are full of babies right now!

After reaching out to many zoos across the Midwest, we were able to compile a list of over 25 baby animals that have been born in 2019. Viewing these animals might not be feasible every day, as they are often kept behind the scenes for medical tests, as well as bonding time with their new parents. But soon enough they should all be visible on a regular basis.

Some babies on our list are rather common – such as the 3 sheep born at Cosley Zoo, and hoof-stock (including Nyalas and Lesser Kudu) at the Saint Louis Zoo. But others on this list are more rare – like the Eastern Black rhinos born at the Blank Park and Lincoln Park Zoos, or the Red Wolves born at Lincoln Park Zoos. In all cases, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) works with the zoos in their Species Survival Plan (SSP Program) to ensure a balance of maintaining a strong amount of animals within each species while also ensuring the zoos are prepared to handle and care for the animals appropriately.

Check out our chart below to find out what zoo babies are near you!
