Our experts tell you what you need to know in our Racine Zoo Mom Tips.
- Parking – Both times we’ve visited this zoo we’ve driven past it and parked on the street or in a public parking lot by the beach. Upon leaving most recently we noticed there is a zoo parking lot across the street from the zoo. This lot is further away than the street parking.
- Cost – This Zoo is reasonably priced. Adult admission is $8, and child admission is $6. AZA reciprocal membership gives you 50% off.
- Strollers – This zoo is relatively small. There also isn’t much elevation to this zoo. If you have a two-year old or younger, bring the stroller, but older than that leave the stroller at home.
- Bathrooms – There are three main bathrooms at this zoo. There bathrooms immediately after the entrance, as well as in back by the rhinos. There are also bathrooms in the monkey house.
- Feeding Opportunities – There is a giraffe feeding at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Cost is $5 per person, and you get to feed three treats to a giraffe. You are standing on the ground and the giraffe reaches over the edge to eat the snack from your hand. This encounter lets you see how big the giraffes are. There is also a budgie aviary that you can feed seed sticks to parakeets.
- Wildlife Theater – They offer shows at 2 and 3:30pm. We sat in on one and enjoyed it. The volunteer running the show brought out two animals. The kids (and adults) were able to pet both. It lasts about 20 minutes and is mostly in the shade. We’d recommend this as an interactive opportunity for kids and a rest break.
- Food – You can bring your own food into the zoo. They have a lot of picnic tables for eating at.
- Playground – When we go to zoos, we typically stay away from the playgrounds so we can avoid injuries and focus on the animals. But the two playgrounds here are both very nice. The larger one is in the back near the giraffes and rhino, and has a bouncy type floor, and many slides. The second is much smaller, and is near the barnyard. The smaller playground is more geared toward little kids.
How long does it take to walk around this zoo?
If you’re just doing the zoo and leaving, probably 1-2 hours tops; if you’d like to watch the Wildlife Theater, feed the giraffes, view a keeper chat or two, and let your kids play on the playgrounds, you’re probably looking at 4 hours.
