Our experts tell you what you need to know in our Toledo Zoo Mom Tips.
- Parking – This zoo has two parking lots – one on the south end of the zoo, and one on the north end. We usually park on the south end by Africa. They have a shuttle in this lot, as parking rows 19 and up are a long walk from the zoo.
- Cost – This is a very pricey zoo! AZA reciprocal membership gives you 50% off admission.
- Strollers – This one could possibly go either way. Our recent visit was during their art festival. It was so crowded that having a stroller would have been a nightmare. However, this zoo is on the larger side so little ones are going to tire out pretty easily. Just know that places like the hippo and polar bear viewing will be difficult with the stroller if you bring one.
- Route – The zoo has a south side, with Africa and the Arctic. This is near the south parking lot, so we usually start there and then walk across the zoo. Then after crossing, we recommend you view the Aviary building first, then move on to view the Tiger Terrace and Tembo Trail. After that, you can head toward the aquarium, before finishing with the east side of the zoo.
- Bathrooms – The zoo has bathrooms before the admission gates – which is very nice. However, they weren’t super clean. There were bathrooms located in many spots around the zoo. We like the bathrooms in Tembo Trail.
- Extras – This is a zoo where we recommend the train. It is a short ride – maybe 5 mins. It circles the African Savanna, and gives you a better view of the hoofstock animals like the watusi.
- Must-see exhibits – Africa, Tembo Trail, and the Aquarium I would say are the staples for this zoo. This zoo is rare in having both hippos and elephants, so you MUST go to the Tembo Trail! The aquarium has a sting ray and shark touch tank so that is a must see as well. On our last visit, we stopped in the Aviary building briefly on our way out. We found that it includes sloths and a koala! This should be included on your visit.
- Feeding Opportunities – Giraffe feedings are good at this zoo – they give you a whole head of lettuce for $11 for a family feeding!
- Food – We did see multiple opportunities to purchase food or eat at picnic tables, but didn’t opt for either.
