We’re past Labor Day, and the unofficial end to Zoo Season. That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of opportunities remaining to get out to the zoo this Fall! We actually love going to the zoo in the Fall. Before you go, check out some of our articles below, as well as your local zoo’s website as a lot of zoos will be in transition for the winter season, or possibly closing exhibits for renovation. Habitat renovations are one of the main topics around the country in this week’s News of the Zoos.
- Exhibits to Close for Renovations – Several zoos announced this week that they will be closing one of their exhibits due to renovations. The Sedgewick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas announced they will be closing a 47-year-old building to begin a large reconstruction project. The Denver Zoo is set to close their “Bird World” exhibit on October 1. The zoo will be renovating the exhibit, which they consider “old and outdated”. You can read more here. In similar fashion, the Detroit Zoo will be closing its award-winning Polk Penguin Conservation Center on Sept. 9 for repairs. - Baby Elephant on Exhibit – This is an exciting story for those of you who A) love elephants, and B) live within visiting distance of Lousiville, Kentucky. The Louisville Zoo announced this week that their newest elephant calf is now on exhibit! Check out more here.
- More Babies are Born – Who doesn’t love baby animals? Several zoos announced births this week. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo announced the birth of a baby Indian Rhino. The Niabi Zoo in the Quad Cities announced the birth of a baby alpaca. The Binghamton Zoo announced the birth of a baby porcupine. The Oklahoma City Zoo announced the birth of baby flamingos! The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island announced the birth of a baby anteater! Check out the links of these stories to see some cute baby animals!
