We didn’t have huge expectations for the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. We knew it would be small, but it was on our path and we thought we’d try it. This zoo really impressed us. Their children’s area has many things to keep kids busy. The zoo is nestled alongside a lake, so pack a picnic lunch and have a beach day on top of your visit to the zoo!
Highlights:
- Polar Bear/Seal exhibit – this exhibit garnered national attention by being a nominee for the USA Today Reader’s Best poll for Best Zoo Exhibit. The exhibits utilize solar power, as well as provide great viewing opportunities of these animals
- Badger – I love it when zoos have animals native to their area, so seeing badgers in Wisconsin is a must!
- Reptile House – when we’re seeing different zoos multiple days in a row, we tend to avoid reptile houses because they have static animals, and aren’t much different from each other; but this one is pretty robust and I’m glad we ventured inside
- Photo opportunities – this zoo utilizes its community partnerships well with several photo ops around the zoo
Lows:
- Ape House – not enough room for the orangutans; everyone was crowded around their exhibit, I wish they had more space
- African Savanna – the hoofstock exhibits were all next to each other but just flat spaces for the animals; would like to see them expand this to become a savanna with varying terrains
- Lions – I did get a few good shots of the lions, but I felt like they could use a lot more space as well
